Letterpress copybooks, 1851-1871.

Letterpress volumes (1851-1871) kept by Dow of copies of his personal and business correspondence written to relatives, friends, and business associates, many of them addressed by their first name only. In addition to personal and family matters, he writes of the dry-goods business, his trade with Europe, purchase and sale of stocks and other investments, his activities as an agent on behalf of persons who had portraits painted in Europe, and other matters. Some of his many correspondents were John W. Hall, Boston; H. Holthausen, Philadelphia; Dodge, Baldwin & Co., Boston; Ludovic De Castelnau; Rudolph Kessel; and John and Jeremiah Dow. A small number of letters are in French.
